AZ High Schoolers Await MLB Draft
The first two rounds and the compensation round will take place today, rounds 3-`10 will come tomorrow. Rounds 11-40 take place on Wednesday.
This may be the most divided camp of MLB Area Scouts I’ve seen in years when it comes to slotting the top high school guys in Arizona. There are always divisions of opinion, but this year it is markedly more divisive.
While this is a good year for college recruits in Arizona, it is widely regarded as a down year for high school pro prospects. So with that in mind, here’s how I see it playing out.
It looks like the first high school named called will be that of Pinnacle SS Jake Holmes. Jake really helped himself in the state tournament, where he swung the bat the best that I have seen. He’s a physical guy with a good speed tool and excellent athleticism.
How early does he go?
Word on the street is potentially round 2.
Jacob Gonzalez of Chaparral looks to be the second AZ high schooler to go of the board. He’s a physical bat and profiles as a first baseman in the pro game. The combination of bloodlines and the ability to drive the baseball make him likely to go as early as round 3.
Gatorade Player of the Year Boyd Vander Kooi, an ASU signee , could go anywhere from rounds 3-5 it appears. The big right hander has a prototypical frame, and has shown arm strength and the ability to repeat his delivery.
Keep in mind that players have to establish a minimum dollar amount they will sign for, and if it is more than where teams have him slotted for they may fall further than they should.
Perry’s Trevor Hauver will have his name called at some point, perhaps as early as rounds 5-6 but don;t be surprised if he slides to day 3.
Other names that may hear their names called later in the draft:
Matt Schroer- Arcadia RHP
David Avitia- Alhambra C
Gabriel Ponce- San Luis RHP
Gil Luna- Casa Grande LHP
Gage Workman- Basha IF
Trey Dillard- Desert Mountain RHP
Antoine Mistico- Chandler OF
