Here is a look at some of the players that stood out at last month’s AZDR 2020/2021 Fall Showcase.
Trevor Baugh- 2020 SS Millennium HS : Trevor displayed smooth, athletic infield actions and plenty of arm (84 MPH) to play anywhere in the infield. At the plate he sets up in a narrow, upright stance. He gets the barrel on plane early and shows good bat speed.
Ben Click- 2020 Catcher Corona del Sol HS: Ben is one of the better catchers in the class and she showed why, throwing 78 with a pop of 1.9. He’s a physical 5-11 195 with a lot of strength in the body. At the plate he sets up in a balanced stance with quiet hands and a small load . His exit velo of 86 with wood was one of the better at the event.
Trevor Desiderio- 2020 IF/RHP Perry HS: Trevor is an imposing 6-3 215 and he gets more athletic every day. He profiles as a corner infielder position wise, but it’s the bat that will be his calling card. He has a narrow balanced set up and triggers from a leg kick, generating plus bat speed. He also jumped on the mound and was 82 with a lot of run and sink.
Nate Meyer- 2020 OF Marcos de Niza HS: Nate has a great frame at 6-3 200 and has good athleticism. He ran a 7.07 in the 60. Offensively he has a lot of power potential going forward.
Brysen Hamilton- 2020 Catcher Valley Vista HS: Brysen has a physical 6-3 220 frame with good athleticism. At the plate he’s quiet, launches with a leg kick and whistles the barrel through the zone on plane. He looked good behind the plate in the scrimmage portion of the evening and showed a 2.02 pop time.
Colby Musselmann- 2020 C/OF Brophy Preparatory: At 6-2 180 Colby passes the eye test. He showed an 86 MPH arm from the outfield and looked good behind the dish in the scrimmage. At the plate he has a narrow, upright stance and a flat swing with good gap to gap power.
Dean Bittner- 2020 IF Campo Verde HS: Dean really impressed throughout the evening. A super fast twitch athlete, he tied for the fastest 60 at 6.63. Defensively he showed slick infield actions and threw 84 across the diamond. At the plate he loads into a good hitting position and gets the barrel through the zone with authority.
Nick Agacki-2020 RHP Cactus Shadows HS: At 6-8 195 lbs. Nick has a frame that pitching coaches dream about. He was up to 87 with the fastball with good downhill plane. The delivery is balanced and the arm action is clean. There is enormous upside here.
Luke Legumina- 2020 RHP Basha HS: Luke was 83-85 with the fastball out of a clean, repeatable delivery. He also flashed a mid 70s slider that had late life and looks to be an out pitchg for him.
Beau Ankeney- 2021 1B Desert Vista HS: Beau continues to show that he is the top power bat in the class if not in the entire state. He put on a show in BP, launching 3 balls out in BP and then taking another ball deep in the live pitching scrimmage portion of the event. He’s balanced and athletic in the pre- swing set up. Triggers with a leg kick and produces big bat speed with lift.
Patrick Herrera- 2021 MIF Skyline HS: Patrick may be the most improved player in the state over the past 12 months. He has excellent actions defensively with very good range. He threw 76 across the diamond and showed the ability to throw from multiple angles. At the plate he has a quiet set up with no wasted movement and gets the barrel in the zone early with bat speed. Patrick is also a top basketball player for Skyline.
Austin Corbett- 2021 Of Horizon HS: Austin showed well a year ago at the same event and didn’t disappoint this year. He has surprising juice in his 5-9 155 pound frame, and showed a huge arm in the outfield at 89 MPH. Austin also ran a 6.8 in the 60 yard dash.
Zach Kress- 2021 Catcher Corona del Sol HS: Zach posted one of the better pop times at 1.93 and threw 76 from behind the dish. He’s an athletic backstop who has good quickness and soft hands. At the plate he’s balanced and quiet with a short stride and an efficient line drive swing.
Jake Terry- 2021 OF Valley Christian HS: Jake tied for the fastest 60 time at 6.63 seconds. He has a short quick swing at the plate that produces a lot of line drive contact. He also threw 78 from the OF and had one of the better grip strength numbers at 127.
Zach Park- 2021 IF Scottsdale Christian Academy: Zach has a very projectable 6-2 175 pound frame. He probably profiles best as a 3B at the next level. He showed athletic infield actions and ran a 7.0 in the 60. At the plate he has a simple , quiet set up and a flat swing that generates good bat speed.
Marshall Williams- 2021 IF/C Sunnyslope HS: A very intriguing prospect. Marshall worked out in the infield and then jumped behind the plate. Marshall showed off the arm tool, throwing 81 across the infield and 78 from behind the plate. His 1.93 pop time was one of the best of the event. He’s a switch hitter that shows pop from both sides of the plate. There’s a lot of strength in the body and his grip strength number was the best of the workout.
Maguire Peterson- 2021 IF Notre Dame Prep: At 6-3 155 Maguire has a very projectable frame. I’ve seen quite a bit of him in game play, and he showed well during the workout. At the plate he has a quiet setup and the swing is level with a wide set up and a short stride. He threw 81 across the infield and has rangy athletic actions.
TJ Oster- 2021 IF Valley Christian HS: TJ ran a 6.82 in the 60 . At the plate he has a narrow set up and a big stride to contact. His hands are low and he loads up into a good hitting position.
RJ Elmore- 2021 RHP Red Mountain HS: RJ is a super lean 6-4 175 and comes at hitters from a low 3/4 slot that creates great deception. He’s 82-83 with the fastball and there is a ton of run and sink. Combine that with a low 70s slider and RJ is a ground ball machine.
Andrew Biddle- 2021 OF Liberty HS: Andrew is a very interesting guy. He’s super lean at 5-10 135 with very good speed. He ran a 6.64 in the 60. Sets up tall in the box and loads into as good hitting position. He threw 83 from the outfield.
Derek Figueroa- 2021 RHP/IF Ray HS: Derek is a 2 way guy with big upside. He looked athletic with good actions and arm strength in the infield drills. He has a balanced set up at the plate with a big leg kick and a bit of a hitch. He showed very well on the mound, up to 86 with the fastball with a ton of armside run. He also flashed a high 70’s slider that has late life and is a plus offering.
Derek Smith- 2022 Catcher Horizon HS: Derek is another guy I’ve seen a lot of in games andit was good to see him up close in this format. He’s really beginning to add strength to his 6-2 175 pound frame. At the plate he has an upright stance and a medium length stride. He gets the barrel on plane early. Defensively he put up a 2.05 pop and threw 74 from behind the plate.
