AZDR 2022/2023 Showcase Standouts
A number of players stood out at last month’s AZDR 2022/2023 Showcase Workout. Here are some of the top prospects at the event.
Nick Arias: 2022 Tucson High MIF/RHP: Nick made a strong showing both as a middle infielder and on the mound. Defensively he showed rangy actions at SS and 86 MPH velo across the infield. The 60 time of 7.56 will improve going forward. On the mound he worked in the 84-85 range with some legit arm side run and flashed a hammer of a curveball at 71-72.
Anthony Diaz: 2022 Brophy Preparatory 3B/OF: Anthony’s 5-10 185 pound frame has a lot of strength in it. He swings it from the left side with some juice. Very quiet, balanced set up with no wasted movement in the swing. He gets very good extension and lift.
Andrew Mings: 2022 Chaparral HS OF/1B: Athletic 5-11 165 pound frame. Looked good in OF drills. Threw 85 from the outfield, 79 across the infield. Left handed hitter with a quiet set up out of a wide stance. Barrel gets in the zone early with some buggy whip and excellent extension.
Brandon Compton: 2022 Buckeye Union HS OF/LHP: Left handed hitter with a balanced, quiet set up. Lots of fluidity to the swing. Gets the barrel in the zone early and looks like he can create loft. He also got on the mound in the scrimmage and showed some good pitchability. 7g MPH on the fastball and showed some feel for a mid 60s breaking ball.
Trent Harrington: 2022 Chaparral HS MIF/RHP: Good looking athlete with fluid actions at shortstop. Showed good range and was 83 MPH across the diamond. Left Handed hitter with bat speed. Balanced set up, very quiet hands. Swing is level through the zone with good buggy whip. He lso stepped on the mound during the scrimmage and sat 80-83 with the fastball and showed a 68 MPH curveball with good depth.
Ryan Spier: 2022 Arcadia HS Catcher: Ryan has a very athletic 6-1 180 pound frame. He continues to show that he is one of the top backstops in this class both defensively and at the plate. Showed a 2.07 Pop time with 72 MPH velo. He’s a good receiver with very quiet hands and he frames effectively. At the plate he has a balanced set up with a small leg lift load. He gets the barrel in the zone early and gets good extension. Ryan had the highest grip strength number in the event.
Noah Madas: 2022 Canyon View MIF/RHP: Noah is an interesting prospect with his athleticism and lean frame that will add significant strength over the next several years. At 6-1 150 he has good infield actions and threw 80 MPH across the diamond. At the plate he has an inside out left handed swing that uses the field well.
Caleb Herd: 2022 Cienega HS Catcher: Caleb is a 5-8 150 pound catcher with excellent quickness. He has a quick transfer and showed a Pop time of 2.01 while throwing 77 MPH from behind the plate.
Charles Heil: 2023 Seton Catholic RHP: At 6-3 185 Charles has a dream frame for a pitcher. He sat at 79 with the fastball and flashed a low 70s slider with good depth and tilt to it. There’s a lot more to come out of this young arm.
Linden Reaburn: 2023 Casteel HS OF: Linden is a very toolsy young player. He threw 85 from the outfield and posted a grip strength of 119. At 5-9 1765 he already has a lot of strength in his body and that will surely be one of his calling cards in the future. The swing is loose and athletic and generates good bat speed.
Giovanni Melchione: 2023 Casteel HS Catcher: Gio continues to show advanced defensive tools behind the plate. He put up a 2.1 Pop time with 72 MPH velocity, very good numbers for a freshman. At the plate he’s balanced in the set up with little to no wasted movement . He gets the barrel on plane early and the swing has good extension and whip to it. A definite strong follow going forward.
Carson Bittner: 2023 Campo Verde HS MIF: Carson displayed some of the best infield actions at the event. He has soft hands and quick feet and covers ground very well at SS. His 6-0 150 pound frame has good strength already but that will only continue to improve.
