AZDR Prospect Snapshot: Highland’s Kaleb Herbert (2019 Uncommitted)
Earlier this season I attended a Highland High game against Campo Verde. As is normal, I arrived early enough to catch the pre-game in hopes of seeing something I hadn’t seen before.
When Highland began taking infield, I immediately noticed an incredibly athletic looking shortstop. A quick glance at my roster told me that this was Kaleb Herbert. The name was vaguely familiar, but I did not recall seeing him last season or during the summer and fall.
Cue Google, and a quick search revealed that Mr. Herbert was the QB on the highly ranked Hawks football team. A little more digging showed that Kaleb had thrown for 2257 yards in the fall and completed 66% of his passes.
I also found his football highlight video, which displayed Kaleb throwing on the move all over the field. He showed the ability to move to his left and throw back to his right…. shades of Patrick Mahomes of the KC Chiefs.
The more I watched the more I liked. Kaleb is a super fast-twitch athlete who runs a 6.65 60 yard dash. He has a strong arm and is capable of throwing with authority from multiple arm angles.
At the plate the swing is short and compact with excellent rhythm.
The bottom line: this is the best looking shortstop prospect I have seen in the 2019 class. He just hasn’t played as much baseball as his counterparts due to his football commitments. At 5-11 170 pounds, Kaleb knows his size is an issue in major college football, and he has his sights set on a future in baseball.
Within the next week I went back out to Highland on a weekend and filmed a scouting video for Kaleb. I’m now more convinced than ever that this is a major college prospect who is athletic enough to play anywhere on the field.
As a side bonus, for those evaluators who like bloodlines on a player, Kaleb’s uncle is former Heisman winner Ty Detmer.
Kaleb’s plans include a likely 2 year church mission beginning this summer. He’s beginning to get attention from colleges, and at least one MLB club has their eye on him as a possible draft.
Regardless of the timing, Kaleb Herbert is an athlete to keep your eye on in the future.
