AZDR Prospect Snapshot: Mesquite’s Davis Heller (2019 Grad)
At 6-8 220 pounds, Mesquite’s Davis Heller is one of Arizona’s top right handed pitchers in the 2019 class.
Davis moved to Arizona from the Denver area prior to the start of his sophomore year, and he immediately made his presence felt.
The big righty appeared in 11 games for the Wildcats as a sophomore, throwing 57 innings with a 7-2 record. He punched out 70 batters while walking only 26 while posting an ERA of 1.47.
That summer, Davis was named to the Arizona Junior Sunbelt team, one of only 3 sophomores on the roster.
Last spring Davis was poised to have a big year, both on the mound and at the plate. Unfortunately, he suffered a broken bone in his hand the first week of the season and missed the next 17 games.
Davis returned to action the first week of April, and went on to hit .390 with 6 home runs.
His time on the mound was somewhat limited, tossing 18 2/3 innings with an ERA of 2.62.
Davis threw a no hitter last spring against Campo Verde, fanning 14 hitters in 7 innings of work.
After the season Davis was again named to the Junior Sunbelt Team, and was a key component as the squad went 9-0 to win the championship.
Later this summer he competed with the Reds team at the Area Code Games, and also pitched at the Perfect Game National Showcase.
Davis uses his towering height very well on the mound . He comes at hitters with an over the top delivery that creates a ton of downhill plane on a fast ball that works in the 88-91 range typically. He shows the ability to command both sides of the plate with the pitch. In addition, he is able to get exceptional tilt on his curveball that he throws in the mid 70s. He also features a low 80s change up and maintains arm speed very well.
Davis is a very solid student, carrying a 3.5 GPA at Mesquite. He also shows a lot of leadership intangibles and is a very respectful young man who seems wise beyond his years.
Davis will sign with the University of Oklahoma in November, and will get long looks from MLB scouts in the spring.
If he makes it to school, the Sooners are getting a top notch student athlete who should be a tremendous asset to their program.
