Big 7th Lifts Mountain Ridge Past Hamilton
Mountain Ridge made it 2 straight over top 10 teams in 6A by traveling to Hamilton and taking a 10-6 victory.
A day earlier the Lions took care of business against region foe Pinnacle with an 8-2 victory. This time it was the 2 time defending 6A champs on their home field.
After the two teams traded runs in the first inning, Ridge put 3 on the board in the second courtesy of a pair of bases loaded walks and an errant pick off play.
Mountain Ridge starter Zach Martinez was cruising at this point. The junior right hander blanked the Huskies over the next 3 frames and led 4-1 entering the bottom of the 5th.
But Hamilton wasn’t done. In the bottom of the 5th freshman Brock Selvidge led off with a base hit. Two batters later Michael Brueser pick on an 0-2 slider and deposited over the left field wal to pull the Huskies with a run.
JD McLaughlin followed with a ground ball knock up the middle, and Kyle Hasler walked to put the lead runs on base.
Hayden Baker was next, and the senior launched a towering drive to left that caromed off the top of the wall for a double, scoring McLaughlin and Hasler and giving Hamilton a 5-4 lead.
In the top of the 6th with 2 outs, Ridge got a base knock from Zach Roth and Jared Kampf was hit by a pitch bringing Jason Harayda to the plate. The senior sent a deep drive to right center that short hopped the wall for a double to score Roth. Kampf was thrown out at the plate on an incredible relay from Selvidge to Dustin Bermudez to Britt Graham, but the score was tied at 5.
Ridge took control in the top of the 7th. A lead off single by Travis Warriner, a sac bunt and a walk to Preston Godfrey put men on 1st and 2nd. After a passed ball advanced the runners, Hamilton elected to intentionally walk Luke Blachut to set up the double play with one out.
Jack Dieckman stepped up and made the Huskies pay with an RBI single to give Ridge a 6-5 lead.
The next batter was catcher Ryan Ellis, and on a 1-1 pitch the left handed hitting sophomore cranked a drive to right center that left the yard for a grand slam and a 10-5 lead.
Martinez tossed 5 innings for a no decision with 6 Ks.
Brock Peery got credit for the W in relief.
Harayda, Ellis and Dieckman all had 2 hits for Ridge.
Brueser was 4-4 with 3 RBIs for Hamilton.
