Corona Edges Desert Vista at Chase Field
Corona del Sol got a solid mound performance from senior Matt Novis as the Aztecs took a 3-2 win over rival Desert Vista at Chase Field.
Novis punched out 12 in 6 innings of work to earn the win. He allowed only 4 hits and walked a pair.
Brandon Childers matched Novis pitch for pitch for the first 3 frames.
The big junior righty also threw 6 strong innings, surrendering 3 hits while fanning 7.
The Aztecs got on the board in the top of the 4th when Wyatt Berry and Novis both walked to start the inning.
Hunter Haas followed with a sacrifice attempt, but Childers fired to third to force the lead runner for the first out.
Next up was Brian Kalmer, and as he has done all season, the junior third baseman cranked a line shot deep to left field for a 2 RBI double.
DV answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the 4th when Zac Paqueete singled and came around on a Jacob Cavaleri double to make it 2-1.
Corona stretched the lead in the top of the 6th, adding an insurance run when Novis doubled and courtesy runner Eric Weidner stole third and scored on a sac fly from Haas to make it 3-1.
DV cut the lead to one in the bottom of the 6th when Brndon Schlabach singled in Kaeden Moore who had walked.
Aaron Garcia on to close it for Corona in the 7th, setting the Thunder down in order for the save.
Boulder Creek 11 Pinnacle 8
Boulder Creek traveled to Pinnacle and shocked the Pioneers 11-8 despite being outhit 13-7.
The Jaguars took advantage of a serious case of leather allergy in the Pinnacle dugout. The ‘neers kicked it around for 6 errors to go along with 8 walks accounting for 4 unearned runs.
Austin Miller got the win on the hill in relief of Evan Hieb. Miller worked 4 1/3 innings and allowed 6 hits and 3 runs with 5 Ks.
Jason Reed had a pair of hits for the Jags.
Bennett Liebe was 4-4 with a double and a homer for Pinnacle.
Deer Valley 9 Desert Edge 8
Deer Valley held off a late Desert Edge rally as the SkyHawks took a 9-8 victory.
Desert edged trailed 9-1 entering the 6th inning but hung up a 7 spot to pull within a run.
Deer Valley was led by Chase Parks, who went 3-4 with 3 RBIs.
Wesley Hamen also had a 3 hit game for the Hawks.
Gio Gonzalez was 2-3 with 2 RBIs for DE.
Buckeye 6 Youngker 5
Buckeye rallied for 5 runs in the bottom of the 7th inning to walk off Youngker 6-5.
The Hawks pulled within one on a Demetrio Botello 2 RBI double.
2 straight walks to Ty Wingfield and tied the score , and Joseph Perex tied the score, and Carlos Milares was hit by a pitch to bring in the winning run.
Botello was 3-4 with a pair of RBIs.
Wingfield and Milares combined on the bump for the win.
Andrew Candelaria was 4-4 for Youngker
Coconino 4 Mingus 3
Jackson Foster singled in Kyle Casados with the walk off game winner in the bottom of the 7th as Coconino edged Mingus 4-3.
Foster ended the day 3-3 with a homer and 2 RBIs.
Jake Plecas tossed 5 innings and allowed 3 unearned runs.
