Griffey Title Goes to Sandlot

Aug 1, 2018 |

Wilson Sandlot 15U

Wilson Sandlot made it two in a row last week, capturing the AABC 15U Ken Griffey, Jr. World Series a week after the 17U team had taken home the title at the Don Mattingly World Series.

Sandlot cruised through pool play, going 4-0 and outscoring its opponents 47-15.

In double elimination bracket play, the ‘lot fell to a tough South Troy Dodgers (NY) team 7-5 in round 2, but rebounded with wins over Trombly Apaches (CO) and DBAT Elite (TX).

After Tuesday’s games, 3 teams remained alive for championship Wednesday, and Sandlot drew the bye, heading straight to the title game.

The semi-final game featured DBAT from Texas and the South Troy Dodgers from New York. DBAT pulled away for a 15-3 win, setting up a title clash with Sandlot.

In the championship game it was all Sandlot, putting up a first inning 5 spot and cruising to a 10-1 win over DBAT in 6 innings to claim the crown.

Derek Figueroa (Ray HS 2021) scattered 6 hits and fanned 7 over 6 innings to get the W on the mound.

Tanner Rice (2021 Red Mountain) was 2-3 with 2 RBIs and Tourney Batting Champ Wes Kath (Desert Mountain 2021) was 2-3 with a double.

The Tournament MVP was Mountain Ridge 2021 LHP/1B Gray Bailey, who threw 10 innings over 2 outings and allowed only 1 run while punching out 18.
In addition, he was 6-13 at the plate for a .462 BA.

Batting Champ Wes Kath was on fire all week. He ended the tournament 14-26 (.548) with a team leading 11 RBIs and 11 runs scored.

As a team, Sandlot hit .354 over 9 games.

Barrett Skaugrud (O’Connor 2021) went 11-26 (.423) with 5 doubles and drew 10 walks.

Carson Baker (Liberty 2021) was 10-26 with 10 RBIs and 10 runs scored.

Zach Kress (Corona del Sol 2021) was 7-14 and drew 6 walks.
