Horizon , Nogales Move On To 5A Final
Sam Page threw 5 2/3 innings of shutout ball with 7 Ks as Horizon advanced to the 5A state title game on Tuesday afternoon.<bR. Kody Huff worked the final 1 1/3 innings and punched out 3 of the 4 batters he faced.
The Huskies used a pair of big innings to put matters to rest.
With the game scoreless entering the bottom of the third inning, Logan Kershner and Huff both singled.
Tony Sortino followed with a deep blast over center fielder Brian Leon’s head for a triple and a 2-0 lead.
With 2 outs, Sam Buchkowski drove in Sortino with a line drive knock to center and it was 3-0.
Horizon blew it open in the 6th inning.
Christian Jacob singled and the Saints opted to intentionally walk Huff for the second time in the game. Sortino followed with another single and the bases were juiced for Derek Smith, who dropped a pop fly into short left field to plate Jacob and move the score to 4-0.
Buchkowski was next, and the junior lined a ball into the left field corner for a bases clearing triple to make it 7-0.
Nick Gore’s ground single through the right side would plate Buchkowski and it was all over.
Horizon pounded out 13 hits on the day.
Buchkowski was 3-4 witha triple and 4 steaks.
Gore was 3-3 and Sortino was 2-4 with 2 RBIs and 2 runs scored.
Nogales 4 Desert Mountain 1
Gerardo Martinez tossed a complete game, allowing 3 hits and a solo run with 4 Ks as Nogales advanced to the state title game against Horizon in the program’s first year in the 5A division.
Martinez used a mid 80s fastall and mixed in a Bugs Bunny change up to keep the Wolves hitters off balance all night.
DM starter Nick Suspenzi matched Martinez pitch for pitch for 4 innings before the Apaches broke through in the 5th.
Ricky Maytorena led off the 5th inning for Nogales with a hit by pitch and Jorge Bojorquez laid down a perfect bunt for a base hit.
Alec Acevedo followed with another bunt, but Suspenzi wheeled and got the force at third for the first out of the inning.
Chuy Lopez then walked to load the bases and Suspenzi’s night was over.
Connor Elwell came on in relief and on a 3-1 count to Mario Duarte, Elwell attempted a pick to third but the ball short hopped Wes Kath as Bojorquez streaked for home for the game’s first run.
Duarte would walk to re-load the bases and the Wolves went to Anthony Caraballo on the hill.
Carballo would hit Kenneth Jimenez with a pitch, driving in the second run of the inning, and Mario Vega followed with another walk and it as 3-0.
The Wolves tried to battle back in the 6th, getting a scorched line drive lead off triple from Paul Sachen and an RBI grounder from Kath to make it 3-1.
In the bottom of the 6th Maytorena doubled with one out, moved to third on a Bojorquez line single to left and scored on an infield error.
Bojorquez ended the night 4-4 with a run scored.
Nogales and Horizon will meet for the 5A CHampionship on Tuesday at 4:00 PM at Diablo Stadium.
