Horizon Prevails in Pitching Duel
Horizon’s Sam Page and Millennium’s David Enriquez went toe to toe on the mound for 6 innings.
Page allowed 5 hits and fanned 4.
Enriquez, sitting comfortably at 87-89 throughout the evening and keeping Horizon off balance with a nasty slider at 75-78, allowed 5 hits and punched out 9 in 6 innings on the hill.
Page tossed 6 shutout innings, allowing 5 hits and fanning 4 to get the win.
Kody Huff worked a scoreless 7th to get the save.
The game’s lone run came in the bottom of the third inning, when Kevin Justice led off with a double for Horizon.
After a pair of strikeouts, Huff stepped in and grounded a ball up the middle for an RBI knock and a 1-0 lead.
In the top of the fifth Millennium threatened.
With one out Kaleb Duncan dropped down a bunt and the speedy freshman beat it out for a base hit.
Deon Reese followed with a line drive single to left, and when Trevor Baugh walked the bases were loaded.
Alex Figueroa was next, and the senior bounced a ball to the shortstop side of second base. SS Sam Buchkowski elected to take it himself for the double play, but his throw was wide, allowing 2 runs to apparently score.
However, interference was ruled on Baugh’s slide at second and the double play was awarded to end the inning.
Horizon will sit until next Thursday and await the winner of Monday’s Notre Dame vs. Millennium game .
Notre Dame 5 Millennium 2
Junior left hander Connor Markl tossed 6 1/3 innings and allowed only 6 hits and 2 runs to lead Notre Dame to a 5-2 elimination game victory in the 5A state tournament.
Notre Dame plated solo runs in the first and second innings off Falcon starter Matt Bohnert.
Griffen Chewning led off the game with a walk, moved to second on a balk and on to third on an infield grounder. He would score on Jarrett Pille’s ground out.
In the second Michael Piazza singled, stole second and scored on Ty Kniffin’s base hit.
Chewning would lead off the 3rd with a double and score on an infield error to make it 3-0.
Later in the inning Piazza knocked in a pair of runs with a single to make it 5-0.
Seth Martin got the Falcons on the board in the bottom of the 3rd, driving in Jack Bishop with a sac fly.
In the 4th, Dylan Skov’s sac fly scored Matt Hall to cut the lead to 5-2, but that was as close as Shadows would get.
Notre Dame will face off against Millennium on Monday for the right to play Horizon to determine the Pool B champion.
Nogales 5 Desert Mountain 2
Nogales jumped out to an early lead and held on for a 5-2 victory over Desert Mountain.
The Apaches scored 3 runs in the bottom of the first and a solo run in the second.
Alec Acevedo held the Wolves scoreless into the 6th inning. He would finish the night with 5 2/3 IP, allowing 6 hits and 2 runs with 7 Ks.
German Fajardo threw 1 1/3 scoreless innings in releif.
The Apaches got multi-hit games from Jorge Bojorquez, Jesus Lopez, Mikey Gerardo and Brayan Espinoza.
Wes Kath had a pair of hits for DM.
Sunrise Mountain 9 Verrado 4
Sunrise Mountain pounded out 14 hits and took a 9-4 win over Verdao in the pool A elimination game of the 5A state tournament.
Caleb Thomason tossed a complete game, scattering 7 hits and allowing 4 unearned runs to pick up the W.
Thomason also went 2-3 at the dish.
Offensively, Noah Thompson was 3-4 with 3 RBIs.
Jacob Stockton was 4-4 for the Mustangs, and Ethan Snodgrass was 2-4 with a double and 2 RBIs.
Sunrise will play Desert Mountain on Monday for the right to face Nogales for the pool A championship.
