Nogales Erupts Late to Top Verrado

It took a while for Nogales to get the train rolling, but in the end the Apache Express pulled away from Verrado for a 10-1 win in the 5A state tournament.
Starting pitchers Matthew Bachelier ( Nogales) and Cameron Hood (Verrado) battled in a scoreless tie for 3 innings, with Hood actually taking a no hitter with 6 Ks into the 4th.
But in the bottom of the 4th the Apaches began to roll, loading the bases and scoring 3 runs when Kenneth Jimenez was hit by a pitch, Mario Duarte walked and Miguel Vega knocked in the 3rd run on a fielder’s choice grounder.
Verrado answered in the 5th when Jake King scorched a triple to deep right field and scored on Gillis Champagne’s ground out.
In the 5th Brayan Espinoza and Jorge Bojorquez walked, and with one out Alec Acevedo stepped in. The senior worked an incredible 12 pitch at bat before smoking a double to right, plating Espinosa and Bojorquez for a 5-1 lead and ending the night for Hood.
The Apaches would tack on 5 more runs off the Verrado bullpen in the 6th to close out the scoring.
Acevedo would finish the evening 2-4 with 4 RBIs.
Bojorquez was 2-3 with 3 runs scored.
Bachelier earned the W with 4 scoreless innings with 7 Ks, and Vega worked the final 3 in relief, allowing one run on 3 hits.
Millennium 11 Notre Dame 0 (5 Inn)
Millennium used a 10 hit attack and took advantage of four Notre Dame errors en route to an 11-0 mercy rule win over the Saints.
The Tigers plated a pair of runs in the first inning courtesy of 2 NDP errors, a fly ball to right center that was misplayed into a hit and a pair of fielder’s choice grounders.
In the second the Tigers sent 11 men to the plate and scored 8 runs to end the evening’s suspense.
Starting pitcher Robbie Schmidt tossed a 5 inning complete game shutout. The right handed side-armer allowed only 2 hits and punched out 6.
Freshman outfielder Kaleb Duncan was 3-3 with a double and a run scored.
Tanner Thomason and Connor Hill each had 3 RBIs for the Tigers.
Horizon 5 Cactus Shadows 4
Derek Smith singled in Kody Huff in the bottom of the 6th innng to give Horizon a 5-4 win over Cactus Shadows.
The Huskies scored their 5 runs on only 4 hits but were helped by 7 walks.
Smith drove in 3 runs for the Huskies on a 1-2 night.
Huff was 1-3 and scored 3 times.
Tanner Scheub earned the win in relief with 2 scoreless innings.
Peyton McGregor was 3-3 with a double and triple for Cactus Shadows.
Desert Mountain 14 Sunrise Mountain 2 (5 Inn)
Desert Mountain sent 13 men to the plate and scored 8 runs in the bottom of the first inning as the Wolves crushed Sunrise Mountain 14-2.
Drake Mueller went 4-4 at the plate and knocked in 4 runs
Aiden Storm was 3-3 with 2 RBIs and 4 runs scored.
Nick Suspenzi threw 3 scoreless innings, allowing 2 hits to earn the win.

Seton Catholic 6 Canyon del Oro 4
Seton Catholic escaped a bases loaded jam in the bottom of the 7th inning and defeated Canyon del Oro 6-4
The Sentinels got 2 hit games from Rocco Gump, Ryan Johnson and Mike Kenney.
Kenney scattered 10 hits over 6 1/3 innings and allowed 4 runs to earnt he W.
Kike Romero homered for CDO.
Mesquite 14 Estrella Foothills 4 (6 Inn)
Mesquite hammered out 18 hits and rolled to a 14-4 6 inning run rule victory over Estrella Foothills.
Davis Heller was 4-4 with a homer, 2 doubles and 3 RBIs.
Holden Breeze went 2-4 with a homer, 2 RBIs and 2 runs scored.
Holden Owen was 3-4 and Grant Gorrell had a pair of doubles.
Jacob Henderson threw 5 1/3 innings with 5 Ks to get the win on the hill.
Vista Grande 8 Lee Williams 4
Vista Grande used a 5 run 6th inning to take an 8-4 win over Lee Williams.
Emilio Barreras went 3-4 at the dish with a homer and 4 RBIs.
Marco Ozuno was 3-4 and scored twice.
Anthony Garcia worked 5 innings on the bump and punched out 4 for the win.
Adam Belloc threw 2 scoreless in relief.
Mike Bathauer was 2-3 with a bomb and 3 RBIs for the Volunteers.
Salpointe rebounded from surrendering a 9 run 5th inning and defeated Saguaro 14-9. The Lancers had an 8-0 lead entering the 5th when Saguaro snet 15 men to the plate and scored 9 times to take a 9-8 lead.
Salpointe added 3 in the bottom of the 5th and 3 more in the 6th to pull away.
Saguaro suffered from some acute leather allergy as they committed 7 errors on the night and also walked 8 batters.
Nano Vasquez was 4-5 for Salpointe and scored 4 runs.
Cade McGee and Mikey Villa each had 2 hits.
