O’Connor, Ridge Advance to 6A Title Game
Mountain Ridge took an early 3-0 first inning lead and rode the left arm of Matthew Liberatore to a 9-1 win to advance to the 6A state championship game on tuesday night.
Mountain View knew it had to play it’s best game to have a chance, and spotting Liberatore an early lead was not in the plans.
Ridge scored its 3 first inning runs with 2 outs, courtesy of a 2 RBI double by Travis Warriner and an RBI knock by Brock Peery.
Mountain View didn’t fold, however. The Toros got on the board in the bottom of the first when Sean Rimmer singled and scored when Joe Georgini’s fly ball was misplayed in the outfield.
But the third inning proved to be the Toro’s undoing, as Ridge plated 5 more runs.
Luke Blachut knocked in a pair with a single. Ryan Ellis followed with a sac fly RBI. After a Zach Roth walk, Jared Kampf and Jason Harayda had consecutive RBI singles to make it 8-1.
Liberatore was not his sharpest, struggling with his command a bit, but the big left hander scattered 4 hits over 6 1/3 innings and fanned 10 with 4 walks.
O’Connor 9 Skyline 4
Mitchell Decovitch threw a complete game allowing 8 hits with 5 Ks as O’Connor defeated Skyline 9-4 to move on to the 6A state title game aganst Mountain Ridge.
Skyline jumped on Decovich early, with 3 straight singles to open the game and a defensive snowball fight resulted in a 4-0 first inning lead.
Decovich settled in and put up goose eggs the rest of the way as the O’Connor offense began to roll. The Eagles scored a pair in the 3rd and 3 more in the 4th to take a 5-4 lead.
In the fifth SDO loaded the bases and Greg Bozinovich lined a ball into the corner in right filed for a 3 RBI double to make it 8-4.
Nolan Gorman was 3-3 on the night and scored 3 times. Colton Kucera was 4-4 and Mason Skaugrud had a pair of hits and 2 RBIs.
Nogales 6 Sunrise Mountain 5 (9 Inn)
Pinch hitter Sammy Legleu singled in Luids Rodriguez with the game winner in the bottom of the 9th to walk off Sunrise MOuntain 6-5 in the 4A semi final.
The Apaches will advance to face Catalina Foothills in the 4A title game Monday night at Hi Corbett field.
German Fajardo threw 6 1/3 innings with 9 Ks for Nogales.
Sunrise starter Trevor Pruitt fanned 8 in 4 innings of work.
The Mustangs outhit Nogales 9-6.
Sahuarita 12 Casteel 5
Sahuarita overcame a 2-0 deficit by scoring 12 runs in thwe final four innings to pull away from Casteel and take a 12-5 win in the 3A state semi final.
Jose Dicochea punched out 10 in 5 innings on the hill and went 2-5 at the plate with a triple and 3 RBIs.
Saul Escarrega and Omar Felix each ahd 2 hits for Sahuarita.
Marcus Lucas had a pair of doubles and 4 RBIs for Casteel.
