Salpointe Knocks Off Mesquite For 4A Title
Salpointe Catholic got a solid mound effort from junior left-hander Jaeden Swanberg and did just enough offensively to hand Mesquite it’s only loss of the season in games that count and claim the 4A State Championship.
Mesquite started the scoring in the bottom of the 2nd when Jaeden Orozco singled and then scored when Holden Owen shot a ball inside the bag at first into the corner for an RBI double and a 1-0 lead.
Salpointe responded in the 3rd when Romeo Ballesteros led off with a single and Nano Vasquez followed with a walk.
After a pair of outs, Jose Cornejo lined a base knock to center, plating both runners for a 2-1 Lancer lead.
In the 5th the Lancers were at it again.
Ballesteros led off with an infield single and two batters later Cade McGee reached on an infield error.
Mesquite starter TJ Clarkson then got a punch out of Ricky Santiago for the second out of the inning, but reached his pitch count, forcing Coach Jeff Holland to bring in center fielder Jacob Henderson in relief.
Henderson’s second pitch went to the backstop, moving the runners to second and third, and two pitches later a wild pitch would score Ballesteros and it was 3-1.
With 2 outs in the top of the 7th, pinch hitter Nomar Basurto came to the plate huntin’ the fastball and smoked the first offering he saw up the gap in right center for a stand up triple.
Cornejo then dropped a parachute fly ball into short left for an RBI knock and a huge run to make it 4-1 Lancers.
Mesquite finally began to make some noise in the bottom of the 7th.
With McGee on in relief of Swanberg, Holden Breeze led off with a single, and Grant Gorrell was then hit by a pitch.
When Clarkson drew a walk, the bases were loaded with no outs.
Heller then sent a hard grounder into the hole at short, but Ballesteros made a nifty play to the backhand and forced the runner at second while Breeze scored to make it 4-2.
Jaeden Orzoco followed with a sac fly to left field for the second out, scoring Gorrell to pull the ‘cats within a run at 4-3.
McGee then clutched up, getting a 3 pitch K of Henderson to end the game.
Swanberg scattered 5 hits over his 6 innings on the slab, allowing 2 runs with 4 Ks to get the W.
Clarkson punched out 12 in his 4 2/3 innings on the hill and allowed 3 runs on 5 hits.
Offensively Mesquite was plagued by fly balls, with 13 of their 21 outs recorded via balls in the air.
Sabino 3 Sahuarita 0
Senior right-hander Mike Snyder tossed a complete game 3 hit shutout to lead Sabino to a 3-0 win over Sahuarita in the 3A State Championship game..
Snyder fanned 7 and walked 2 in earning the victory.
Snyder and Sahuarita’s Jose Dicochea locked up in a scoreless duel for 4 innings before the Sabercats broke through in the 5th.
With one out in the 5th Riley Squire walked and moved to second on a wild pitch, and to third on a sac fly from Preston Clifford.
Adam Villasenor followed with a swinging bunt and beat it out for an infield hit for the game’s first run.
In the top of the 7th Sabino loaded the bases when Jake Wiltshire and Clifford both walked and Adam Villasenor reached on an infield error.
Wiltshire would score the game’s second run on a wild pitch, and Clifford was out at the plate trying to score from second on the same play.
Gavi Coldiron followed with an infield hit to score Villasenor and it was 3-0.
Villasenor and Brayden Graham both had 2 hits for Sabino.
