Sandlot Takes Mattingly Crown- Headed to Farmington
Wilson Sandlot 17U won a pair of games at Surprise Stadium Wednesday morning to claim the Championship in the 2018 AABC 17U Don Mattingly World Series.
With the win, Sandlot advances on to the prestigious 18U Connie Mack World Series in Farmington, NM August 3-11.
Sandlot ended the tournament 9-1 for the week, with their sole loss a 5-4 defeat to Creek Bulldogs.
Sandlot defeated a very strong DBAT team from Dallas 3 times during the week, including a 9-1 win on Wednesday morning to set up a rematch with the Creek Bulldogs in the title game.
In the championship game, Red Mountain 2019 Luke Hyzdu got the call on the mound, and responded with a 6 inning effort, allowing only 4 hits and a solo run.
Meanwhile, the offense was led by Tournament MVP Holden Breeze (Mesquite 2019), who went 3-5 with a run and an RBI.
Kyle Hasler (Hamilton 2019)went 3-4 with 2 runs scored and an RBI.
For the week, Breeze was 14-31 for a .452 average with a team leading 10 RBIs and 10 runs scored and an OPS of 1.141.
McKay Barney (Mountain View 2019) was 12-28 (.429), and Haser was 10-24 (.417).
On the mound Sandlot got innings from 13 different players, with complete games from Rylan Dobosh (Flagstaff 2019), Conner Watson (Red Mountain 2019), and Tyler Magin (Desert Vista 2019).
Drew Calloway (Sabino 2019) threw w5 scoreless innings with 9 Ks.
TJ Clarkson worked 6 innings in 2 appearances and did not allow a hit while punching out 11.
It was an incredible week for the Creek Bulldogs as well. The ‘dogs were short handed in their first game and lost, but then rattled off 7 wins in a row against teams from Utah, Texas, California and New Mexico , and won a draw on Tuesday to advance to the Championship game.
Sandlot will head to the festivities in Farmington on August 1. The annual parade is held August 2, Pool play begins Friday August 3 and the double elimination bracket starts Monday August 6 for the top 2 teams in their 4 team pool.
