Scout Fest At GCU: Ridge Tops O’Connor
With an army of MLB front office executives and scouting personnel on hand at Grand Canyon University, Matthew Liberatore and Mountain Ridge took a 2-1 win over Nolan Gorman and O’Connor.
The two games between northwest valley rivals were relocated to GCU to accommodate the expected throng of Scouts, Cross Checkers, Scouting Directors and General Managers.
Liberatore did not disappoint. Despite not having his best command, the senior lefty worked 5 1/3 innings, punching out 13 and surrendering only 2 hits before hitting his pitch count limit.
Sophomore Zach Rogers tossed 1 2/3 scoreless innings to pick up the save.
Ridge got on the board off SDO starter Cal Lambert in the 3rd, when Travis Warriner doubled with 2 outs and scored on a Jake Robson base knock.
In the 4th, Preston Godfrey doubled and later scored on a sac fly by Jack Dieckman to give Ridge a 2-0 lead.
But O’Connor battled back in the bottom of the 4th. Mason Skaugrud lined a knock to right field to lead off the inning and Colton Kucera followed with a walk.
Both runners advanced on a passed ball, and Noah Burgarello’s ground ball would plate Skaugrud to make it 2-1.
In the matchup everyone came to see, Gorman hit a soft line out to right in the first, punched out in the 3rd, and tapped a comebacker to Liberatore in the 5th.
Mesquite 4 Campo Verde 0 Davis Heller threw a complete game no-hitter with 13 Ks as Mesquite blanked Campo Verde 4-0.
Heller walked 2 batters and needed only 89 pitches for the no-no.
Willie Cano was 2-4 with a bomb and 2 RBIs for the Wildcats.
Pinnacle 16 Horizon 6 (5 Inn)
Pinnacle hammered out 14 hits in 5 innngs and capitalized on 4 Horizon errors and 7 walks as the Pioneers mercy ruled Horizon 16-6.
The ‘neers got big flies from Patrick Donovan, Griffin Hamel, CJ Schauwecker and Luke Woods.
Hamel added a double and was 2-3 with 3 RBIs.
Trey Newman was 3-4.
Mason Gray fanned 5 in 5 innings on the hill.
Basha 11 Hamilton 10
Basha outslugged Hamilton 11-10.
With the wind howling out, the two teams combined for 7 round trippers.
Basha used a 5 run 6th inning, highlighted by a Jake Jarvis grand slam and a solo shot off the bat of Justin Quinn, to take the lead for good.
Hamilton got long balls from Hayden Baker, Michael Brueser, Britt Graham, Kyle Hasler, and JD McLaughlin.
Mountain Pointe 5 Desert Vista 2
Mountain Pointe rallied with a 4 run 6th inning to take a 5-2 win over Ahwatukee rival Desert Vista.
Connor Murphy’s 2 run blast highlighted the 4 run 6th
Mountain Pointe starter Nick Wallerstedt tossed 6 innings to earn the W. He took a shutout into into the 6th inning and had 6 Ks.
Corona del Sol 10 Highland 2
Bryan Webb tossed 4 shutout innings to lead Corona to a 10-2 win over Highland.
Brian Kalmer and Eric Weidner both homered for the Aztecs.
Perry 2 Arcadia 0
Ty Pohlmann tossed a complete game 3 hit shutout with 10 Ks to lead Perry to a 2-0 win over Arcadia.
CJ Valdez was 2-3 with an RBI and Adam Parra had a solo homer.
Red Mountain 10- Mesa 0
Andrew Hayes threw a 6 inning no hitter to lead Red Mountain to a 10-0 win over Mesa.
Luke Hyzdu was 1-3 with triple and 3 RBIs.
Tyler Rice and Riley Pagel were 2-3
Chandler 9 Brophy 7
Chandler took a 9-7 win over Brophy.
Sophomore Luke Bass doubled 3 times and knocked in 2.
Luis Montenegro was 2-3 with a pair of RBIs, and eared the win on the mound with 4 2/3 innings.
Liberty 11 Willow Canyon 0 (5 Inn)
Chandler Murphy fanned 14 and allowed 3 hits in 5 innings on the hill as Liberty crushed Willow Canyon 11-0 in 5 innings.
The Lions got long balls from Brady Welch, Luke Pauga and Trevor Felan.
Nolan Lovett had 2 of the Wildcats 3 hits.
