West Side Story: Liberty, O’Connor Take The Hardware
It was an all west valley evening at Tempe Diablo Stadium on Tuesday where Liberty and O’Connor both took home state titles.
Liberty 6 Verrado 2
Liberty claimed the 5A State Championship with a 6-2 win over Verrado.
Chandler Murphy relieved Cameron Bracke in the 2nd inning and went on to throw 4 1/3 innings of shutout ball to earn the mound win. Murphy allowed 3 hits and punched out 5.
JD Wadleigh came in from center field to toss 1 2/3 scoreless innings for the Lions.
Brady Welch led the way offensively, going 3-3 with a double and 2 RBIs.
Jace Johnson went 2-3 and knocked in a run and Luke Pauga had 2 RBIs.
O’Connor 7 Mountain Ridge 1
Freshman Barrett Skaugrud threw a complete game, scattering 9 hits and allowing only a solo run to lead O’Connor to its first state title 7-1 over rival Mountain Ridge.
Skaugrud was in control seemingly all night. He recorded 8 Ks and did not walk a hitter.
The game was tied at 1 entering the 4th when SDO loaded the bases with one out. The Eagles took the lead on a Jayce Easley fielder’s choice ground out, and Noah Burgarello lined a shot into the corner in right for a 2 RBI double and a 4-1 lead.
In the 6th O’Connor would again load the bases with one out. Easley would score on a passed ball, and Mason Skaugrud followed with a base hit to plate Burgarello and Nolan Gorman to make it 7-1.
Ridge actually out hit O’Connor 9-7 with Colton Kucera going 3-4 and scoring a run.
Travis Warriner had 3 hits and an RBI in a losing effort for Ridge.
